1. What is Sembcorp's SME Green Energy Plan?
Our SME Green Energy Plan is a fixed-rate renewable energy price plan. It is an online exclusive price plan with monthly e-bills sent to you. Based on your actual electricity consumed, you will receive international Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for every megawatt-hour (MWh). Our 100% Green Energy plan is validated through the retirement of international RECs which is uniquely numbered and tracked.
2. What is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)?
A REC is a market-based instrument that certifies the bearer owns one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a renewable energy source. It is created together with every 1MWh of renewable energy that is generated.
A REC that has been sold once cannot be purchased again. All renewable energy credits are uniquely numbered and generally include information such as where they were generated, the type of renewable resource they came from, and a date stamp of generation. The exchange of RECs is tracked and recorded.
3. What are the benefits of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
RECs provide consumers with certified proof that they are using renewable energy from the grid without having to install solar panels or other renewable energy systems at their homes or business. This offers flexibility, especially for businesses based in multiple places that do not have the infrastructure to install solar panels. With RECs, your business can reduce its carbon footprint.
4. How can I reduce my GHG emissions?
There are three typical scopes of GHG emissions and electricity consumption falls under Scope 2 emissions.
Our Green Energy Plan includes RECs within the price plan. We will help to retire the corresponding amount of RECs for your electricity consumption under the plan. This means that the carbon emissions from your electricity consumption will be offset and compensated by clean energy production from renewable sources. Sembcorp will provide a copy of the certified proof and guarantee in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This helps to reduce your Scope 2 emissions, which are emissions generated from your use of purchased electricity.
5. When will I receive the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Sembcorp?
Sembcorp will retire and disburse the RECs to customers once a year in the month of November.
6. How will I receive the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Sembcorp?
We will disburse the RECs to you at the email address that you provided upon signing up for the electricity plan.
7. How can I check the origin and validity of renewable energy?
RECs registries allocate 1 REC for every 1 MWh of renewable energy generated. Every REC comes with a unique registration number which is included in your certificate. This registration number can be used to validate the renewable energy’s origin with the corresponding RECs registries.
